Abrasion
loss of tooth structure usually at the gum line, caused by use of a hard tooth brush, or poor brushing technique.
Abscess
a local infection resulting in an infection of pus. A dental abscess may be caused by severe decay, trauma, or gum disease, and may be characterized by swelling and pain.
Amalgam
a commonly used silver coloured filling, made of a mix of silver, tin, mercury, copper and zinc.
Bonding
An adhesive dental restoration technique that involves bonding a layer of plastic on the tooth.
Bridge
Artificial teeth used to replace one or more missing teeth that are attached usually on both sides by crowns of adjacent teeth.
Bruxism
The grinding of teeth most commonly while patients are asleep.
Bleaching
Chemical or laser treatment of natural teeth for whitening effect.
Calculus
Hardened plaque containing bacteria, or residue, formed on teeth in between cleanings.
Caries
A hole in the tooth caused by acid producing bacteria (the dental term for cavity)
Composite
a tooth-coloured filling material, made of plastic.
Crown
1. The portion of the tooth above the gum-line;
2. A dental restoration covering all or most of the natural tooth
Cusps
The peaks/bumps on the chewing surface of the back teeth
Dentin
Inner layer of tooth structure under enamel.
Enamel
hard tissue covering the portion of tooth above the gumline. (Also considered the hardest part of the human body!)
Extraction
the removal of teeth. Teeth are normally extracted because they are severely decayed, unrestorable, broken, loose or causing crowding, etc.
Gingiva
Soft tissue surrounding the tooth (dental term for gums).
Gingivitis
Inflammation of gum tissue. The first sign of periodontal (gum) disease.
Impacted Tooth
An un-erupted tooth which is blocked from fully emerging.
Implant
A titanium screw placed in the bone, to replace a lost tooth, or teeth. A crown, bridge, or denture can be fixed to the implant.
Laminate Veneer
a porcelain or composite (plastic) covering bonded directly to the tooth to improve appearance.

Night Guard
a plastic mouth piece used to prevent wear to teeth and TMJ damage usually caused by grinding one’s teeth during sleep.
